My Parents Needed Help and Now Have It

For the past 20 years, I lived in another state that is about a 5 hour plane ride away from where my parents live. I am single and like it that way. So, when my mother began having troubles with dementia last year, it was me that my siblings looked to for help. I moved to be closer to my parents and have been loving it. But now my dad has been diagnosed with the same issue, and caring for them both has been overwhelming. I decided to look for senior home care in Queens to give me a little bit of break time.

It may seem like taking care of your adult parents is no big deal, but the truth of the matter is that there are different stages of dementia, and they get worse with time. At some point, loves ones who have it will need help with eating, going to the bathroom, taking a shower, going to sleep and much more. At some point, they will no longer be able to care for themselves at all, and someone needs to take over and give them the love and care that they need.

Even though I found a place to live across the street from my parents, I also have a full time job. During my eight hours away each day, I quickly found that my parents would find themselves in trouble. They would forget to eat, or they would forget how to cook or not use the restroom as needed. Thankfully, dad planned for this many years ago and was very good about putting money in the bank. So, this enabled me to contact a company who could send a home care employee over to my parent’s place for the eight hours that I was away each day. The person they sent is so kind and helpful, and my parents love her.
